RIC VII, ROME 178, CONSTANTINE I, [CORRECTION]

OBVERSE

CON-STANTI-NVSAVG [CONSTANTINVS AVG]; bust l., bowl-shaped helmet with a long crest, cuir., spear pointing forward, shield on l. arm [H4 l. var.].

REVERSE

VIRTV-SAVGG [VIRTVS AVGG]; camp gate with three turrets (small circle on front of each turret)), gate closed (arch above); varying number of stone layers. P in left field, R in right field. RP in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

[CORRECTION]. Bust is marked H4 l. in RIC (single specimen from Berlin cited) but note unusual helmet: bowl-shaped with a long crest which makes this variety slightly different from typical H4 (cf. bust H4 l. on unlisted ROME [before 187]). However, probably for ROME 178 only this variety exists. Note also other unusual details on rev.: circles in front of turrets and arch over gate. For varieties of Constantine's helmets from ROME 143-193 emission see CORRIGENDA, VOL. VII, p. 348.
