NOT IN RIC
|
UNLISTED BUST TYPE - A4. RIC lists similar type with bust B1 [ROME 71]; quoted after Gnecchi [I medaglioni romani], after Cesano [Catalogo della collezione numismatica di Carlo Piancastelli] and after Hirsch sale catalogue (p. 305). Note also Bruun's remark in footnote 71 proving that it is not a misprint: "The obv. head is very surprising in this context". However, specimen from Hirsch sale - which is presented here - has almost certainly bust type A4, like ROME 73. Again, note Bruun's remark: "Hirsch medallion worn, rev. almost obliterated, obv. head possibly bare". It is not impossible that two bust types exists for this issue, but error in RIC cannot be excluded. Coin should be listed before ROME 71.
