RIC VI, ROMA 127, SEVERUS, [CORRECTION]

OBVERSE

SEVERVSNOBCAES [SEVERVS NOB CAES]; bust r., laur., dr. cuir.

REVERSE

PRINCIP[I]I-V-VENTVTI [PRINCIPI IVVENTVTI]; prince stg. l. in military dress, r. holding standard, l. leaning on sceptre.

NOT IN RIC

[CORRECTION]. RIC cites specimen from the British Museum, but there are two similar coins in BM. One heavier (no. 1950,1006.1086; 2.06 g) with rev. legend PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, which probably should be attributed as ROMA 125. And one lighter (this coin) which has 1.86 g but and rev. legend PRINCIPI IVVENTVTI, not ...IVVENTVTIS. It could be regarded as ROMA 127, but in that case the description of rev. legend in RIC should be changed.

Note, however, that in RIC the difference between ROMA 125 and ROMA 127 is very vague. Both have the same obv. and rev. The only difference is that ROMA 125 belongs to variety (b) "fractions, c. 2.0-1.5 gm" and ROMA 127 belongs to variety (c) "fractions, c. (?) 1.25 gm" (p. 364). 0.25 g is practically unnoticeable and groups (b) and (c) probably should be merged into one group of fractions. In that case ROMA 125 and ROMA 127 would be identical and this coin in question with shorter rev. legend should be listed as a separate variety after ROMA 125.

NOTES

Æ fraction. Weight 1.86 g. From the British Museum Collection (reg. no. 1867,1223.28).
