RIC VI, ROMA [before 1], DIOCLETIAN, UNLISTED ISSUE [IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG]

OBVERSE

DIOCLETI-ANVSPFAVG [DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG]; head r., laur.

REVERSE

IOVICO-NSER-VATAVGG [IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG]; Jupiter stg. l., chlamys hanging behind, r. holding thunderbolt, l. leaning on sceptre. PROM in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

UNLISTED ISSUE. The mark PROM was already known to Cohen (cf. Cohen, vol. VI, p. 517, no. 254) and to Voetter (cf. Sammlung Bachofen von Echt, Wien 1903, p. 133, no. 2329). Also Percy H. Webb - the author of RIC V - mentioned that "the exergual mark PR is common on aurei of the new style before and after the Reform. PROM appears after that event" (RIC vol. V, part II, p. 214). Unfortunately, entire AV series with PROM m.m. was omitted in RIC VI, in error.

Note that so far four different rev. legend breaks are attested: O-NSER-V, C-ONSE-R, O-NSE-R-V and R-V, which could make in RIC four separate entries (cf. TREVERI 802 and 807 or SISCIA 61 and SISCIA 62). Also, two different obv. breaks: I-A and A-N.

Listed in Depeyrot (p. 83, no. 9/1; obv. legend break I-A; rev. legend breaks O-NSER-V - but relevant picture on plate 12 shows break R-V). Note also that similar type with obv. legend break A-N and rev. legend breaks C-ONSER-V (but relevant picture on plate 12 shows breaks C-ONSE-R) is listed in Depeyrot separately as no. 9/3. Coin should be listed in RIC before ROMA 1.
