RIC VII, ARLES 206, LICINIUS II, ENGRAVER'S ERROR

OBVERSE

LICIINV-SIVNNC [LICIINVS (sic!) IVN N C]; bust r., rad., dr., cuir.

REVERSE

VIRTVSE-XERCIT [VIRTVS EXERCIT]; military standard with drapery marked VOT/XX; on either side, captive std. on ground. PARL in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

ENGRAVER'S ERROR. Specimen similar to ARLES 206 except for error in obv. legend: LICIINVS instead of LICINIVS. Probably an engraver's error or an ancient imitation. General note about this issue from p. 229: "Not even the next type, Virtus exercit, is sufficiently well represented to give a clear picture of the distribution of officinae; most obverses are very scarce, if not unique. Licinius I and Crispus are entirely absent".

NOTES

Weight 3.40 g; diameter 18 mm. Coin sold on eBay in May 2013 for EUR 47 [Thanks to the collaboration of Tomasz Speier].
