RIC VII, ARLES [before 286], CRISPUS, UNLISTED ISSUE

OBVERSE

CRISPVS-NOBCAES [CRISPVS NOB CAES]; head r., laur., cuir.

REVERSE

VIRTVS- CAESS [VIRTVS AVGG]; gateway with four turrets, no doors, varying number of stone layers, star above. T crescent AR in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

UNLISTED ISSUE. Mintmark unlisted, but similar to ARLES 264-279 except for crescent instead of star (p. 263-264). According to RIC, however, Virtus Augg reverse was not introduced in Arles till the next issue [ARLES 291] (p. 265). Specimen of a good style but note a reverse variety: gateway has no doors instead of "wide open doors of varying design". Note also that one of two known Constantine's I specimens is very light and that the coin with the same m.m. minted for Constantine II is almost certainly an ancient imitation. Yet it still might be an official issue but further investigations are needed. Coin should be listed before ARLES 286.
