Æ TRIAL PIECE OR IMITATION. This specimen could be a Æ trial piece of unknown aureus from Trier (cf. similarity of obv. on this example of TREVERI 64; ANS 1944.100.5860, 5.31 g, 19 mm). Note, however, that Depeyrot mentions (p. 45, after 2B section) an imitation of aureus (weight 3.09 g) with the same m.m., rev. legend and slightly different obv. legend (...NOB C instead of ...N C). So it could be also an unplated core of another imitation.
